Governing Body

Richard Owen: Headteacher

Richard is Headteacher and joined the governing body as a governor in September 2016. Previously, as Deputy Headteacher, Richard attended full governing body meetings as well as strategy and finance committee meetings. He will continue to do this as part of his role as governor and Headteacher.

Steve Knowles: Chair of Governors / Community Governor

Steve has served on the school governing body since May 2010 and he has been elected as Chair of Governors since September 2016.  He has a background in manufacturing management and holds professional qualifications in management. Steve also serves on the Finance and Curriculum Monitoring Teams.  Steve has undertaken governor training in Managing Parental Complaints and Safeguarding. Steve is also a member of Coppice Primary Academies Trust, and was chair of governors of one of their primary schools for four years.

Tony Hedges:
Vice Chair of Governors and Partnership Governor

Tony joined the governing body as Parent Governor some 20 years ago, when his daughter was a student at Maplesden Noakes.  Prior to becoming a Partnership Governor, Tony served as a LEA Governor. He has been elected as Vice Chair of Governors since September 2016.  Tony is a member of the Strategy, Finance and Non-Qualification Curriculum Monitoring Teams.  He is also the school Health and Safety governor and has recently taken on the role of Safeguarding Governor. He has been actively involved in the Year 12 Business Challenge since it started in 2006.

Tony has undertaken race equality training which was run by the Inclusion Support Service Kent.

Julia Batt: Co-opted Governor

Julia originally joined the governing body as a Parent Governor and has recently been elected as a co-opted governor. Julia has undertaken race equality training which was run by the Inclusion Support Service, Kent.

Lauren Mason: Parent Governor

Lauren joined the governing body as a Parent Governor in November 2021. She is currently a member of the Staff Welfare and Policies monitoring team. Lauren has a child currently attending Maplesden and as a result applied to be a Parent Governor to increase her ties with the local community and make a positive contribution to the success of the school going forward. Lauren currently works as a Digital Media Investigator specialising in CCTV and mobile phone data retrieval/analysis, she has previously worked for the Disclosure and Barring service and in various Safeguarding roles.

Jill Hogan: Co-opted Governor

Jill joined the governing body as a co-opted Governor in December 2021, and she is currently a member of the Student support, SEND and priority students and Staff welfare monitoring teams. Jill has two children currently at Maplesden. Jill is a senior marketing communications consultant who runs her own business in Maidstone.  She was Chair of the BBC Trust’s Audience Council South East and a national Audience Council England member, and was previously board director of the South East London Chamber of Commerce.


All Academies are required to publish annually on their websites the number of individuals (if any) earning over £100k a year. This information is required to be published in bands of £10k.

At 01/09/2021 1 member of staff earns at the school earns between £100-110k a year.
